The Devil's Playthings

Here’s a great little piece of entertainment using a Pack of Cards and although it’s not a magic trick of any kind, it served as a nice little interlude when I was performing magic for a fairly close-knit gathering, particularly men.

I originally saw the story in Jean Hugard’s “Encyclopaedia of Card Tricks, probably about 40 + years ago. I believe it was known as “The Gentleman Soldier’s Prayer Book” and was printed in the “Seven Dials” of London two or three hundred years ago.

I haven’t seen or heard it performed for a long time and indeed I think the last time I performed it was during the Falklands War, when our minds were on our brave soldiers fighting in that far off land.

However, in view of the current situation in Iraq, I thought that resurrecting this little piece again, might give some extra material for our current card workers to use.

Now I must point out that I’m relating what I remember of the story that I used many years ago and I know that it may be very different from the original, so I must apologise at the outset, if I offend anyone who knows or prefers the original version.

So here goes… - Watch this space over the next few days....
